Thanks Received from Cancer Survivorship Centre The following card was received late last week from the Sydney Cancer Survivorship Centre in recognition of the donation from our club. The late Peter Smith, Member of the Rotary Club of Strathfield and Honorary Member of the Rotary Club of Concord, was a great supporter of the wonderful work done by the Cancer Survivorship Centre associated with Concord Hospital and it was with pride that our club was able to make a contribution to the centre following Peter's passing.

Fundraising Underway! With only 7 weeks to go until Angela and Oscar head to the red centre to join Rotarians from around the country in ShelterBox's Trek4Shelter, Larapinta Trek Challenge our fundraising is well underway with our second event having been held at Concord Rotary's Farmers Market, Sunday, 6th June. Setting up the tent is still somewhat of a challenge but we are sure with more practice we can only improve. The bucket collection from the market was generously donated to our fundraising target by the Homebush Boys Interact Club who enthusiastically helped us with both setting up the market and ShelterBox tent. Thank you enormously to Rotarian Peter Smith, member of the Rotary Club of Strathfield and Honorary member of our club for coordinating and organizing the Interact volunteers.

Australia Day Lamington Drop Australia Day began for a few of us with an early morning meet at the home of our Vocational Service Director, Peter Reynolds. Peter and his wife, Mariana very graciously accepted delivery of club banners, promotional material, masks and "Ask Me about Rotary" buttons on Friday 22nd January, which were stored in their garage for the weekend. On Monday, 25th January, the Reynolds gave up their loungeroom for the afternoon and evening after taking delivery of 29 boxes of lamingtons, each containing 30 lamingtons which they guarded from the sweltering heat with a portable air-conditioner generously donated by Michael & Lillian Hayes, ensuring the chocolate on 870 lamingtons did not melt. Bright and early on Australia Day, Peter and Mariana set up a collection point in their driveway from which the clubs in our local area could complete COVID check-ins, sanitise their hands, collect the fantastic Australia Day club banners Rotary District 9675 provided, as well as buttons and masks. Oscar Jones and Rosario Carbarjal from the newly formed Rotary Club of Iron Cove were the first to arrive at 8:30am, collecting 100 lamingtons & coffee vouchers which they delivered to Burwood Police Area Command.

Only 2 weeks until Australian Rotary Health celebrates Hat Day on World Mental Health Day, October 10!
If you can't celebrate on that day, that's okay - we have plenty of events you can get involved in/support during Mental Health Month in October. Of course, you can host your own as well!
By supporting Hat Day you are helping to Lift the Lid on Mental Illness by breaking down the stigma and contributing to vital mental health research.
We know that 1 in 5 Australians experience a mental illness every year, but with COVID-19, these figures may have increased. Therefore, it is more important than ever that we continue to fund mental health research, especially for our youth.

As September and Springtime arrived we turned our attention to Basic Education and Literacy. This month we had wonderfully informative talks from John Walters of the Rotary Club of Engadine about the See It, Say It, Share It immersive and icon reading & literacy project and are in talks with the other Rotary Clubs that meet on Wangal land in the Eora Nation to have a Wangal story produced in this format for the children of our communities and further afield. In addition Jenny-Lee Scharnboeck from Take 3 for the Sea spoke to us about plastic pollution and the importance of removing and preventing plastic from entering the sea and our environment. Also joining us were Jackie MacCullagh and Linda Connor from the Concord Emergency Department Sustenance Team and our own Peter Dowley who spoke to us about how to keep ourselves and our accounts safe when interacting with the virtual world. If you missed any of these presentations follow the links above to view the video recording of each presentation. I will provide updated links as the videos become available or you can check out our Speakers Presentations page in News & Updates. One of the wonderful things about literacy and being able to read is the many places, experiences and things that can be learned. Even more than that reading and sharing stories unites people and friends through a shared experience. In addition to supporting the See It, Say It, Share It project I am encouraging anyone who enjoys a good story to join me in supporting Shelterbox in a new way by joining their book club. https://www.shelterboxaustralia.org.au/book-club/ Plastic Fact: Over 1 million plastic bottles are purchased every minute around the world. Single-use plastic water bottles are a major source of pollution, clog landfills and require large amounts of energy and water to make and transport. Solution: Refuse plastic bottles and seek reusable alternatives. Don’t drink bottled water, instead purchase a quality reusable drink bottle and source healthy drinking water from the tap or bulk sources. Every single-use bottle you refuse is a positive move for the planet. Take 3 for the Sea

And before we knew it August was upon us and despite the persistence of COVID-19 and the worrying thought of it lurking wildly in places unknown in the community we continue on as best we can, maintaining social distancing, looking out for each other and keeping our Market customers and each other safe. August is Membership and New Club development month within Rotary. In line with that we will be holding a Club Assembly on 24th August to discuss members interests and ideas for the coming month and to prepare for a visit from District Governor Warwick Richardson. Our club has a very busy schedule ahead with our second Market of the month coming up this weekend as well as having a number of speakers joining us at our Monday night meetings. Please refer to our Speakers Schedule for more information. We also have a club picnic scheduled for 30th August at another one of our beautiful local parks so keep an eye on our calendar for more details and remember to Take 3 for the Sea! Plastic Fact: Over 8.3 billion tonnes of plastic has been made since its mass production began in the 1950s. Only 9% of this plastic has been recycled, the other 91% sits in landfill, floats in our oceans or has been burned.

The District Governors of 2018-19 petitioned the RI Board to develop a proposed pilot structure for Rotary in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific that will help us be relevant for our members, contemporary and flexible. They now invite all Rotarians to provide feedback on three simple questions: - What is good in Rotary and Rotaract and should be retained?
- What needs to change and why?
- In an ideal world, how would Rotary and Rotaract be structured and operate?
Your responses will be collated and shared with the working groups to help them develop their proposed strategies and structure, which will feed into the design of a pilot structure for our region. They request that you be honest and bold and provide your feedback by 21 June 2020.

OUTREDS(Outback Rotary Education Scholarships)The resumption of our OUTREDS program is certainly a very positive outcome during the period of "hibernation" and proves once again the resilience of Rotary. I have said it before but it needs reiterating, congratulations to both clubs involved and in particular to those individual members who have put so much effort into the success of this first scholarship which has the additional benefit of adding a further dimension to the relationship we have formed over the past few years. Dear Members and Friends of Rotary, Please join us for our very first online meeting using an App called Zoom on Monday 30th March from 6:30 pm. Angela Porritt will be sending a link, with instructions very soon to you. Thank you David Brown for another bumper newsletter received recently. Also, a huge thank you to Angela Porritt, supported by Michael Brown, for a seamless transition to our new website. Thank you to everyone for many years of assisting with the Concord Farmer’s Market - all the behind the scenes meetings, hard work and planning are greatly appreciated. Please note that the Concord Farmer’s Markets have been cancelled until further notice. We are doing everything we can to support our stall holders via facebook and our website during this tough time. When this is all over, we’ll re-launch the markets, and we know we’ll have club and community support to build the market bigger and better than ever before. We care very much about all of you. Please keep us informed if you need our help, need to talk and keep us updated of any illnesses or celebrations. Please, during this challenging time, look out for each other and continue to take precautions as advised to keep yourselves safe. We need to care about each other more now than ever before.
Thank you for your continued support during this challenging time.

Clean water, sanitation and hygiene education are basic necessities for a healthy environment and a productive life. When people have access to clean water and sanitation, waterborne diseases decrease, children stay healthier and attend school more regularly and mothers can spend less time carrying water and more time helping their families.

Rotary Youth Driving Awareness (RYDA) is starting up again for 2020 and Judy Love is after volunteers. The duties are far from onerous and indeed a reasonably easy day of Rotary fellowship is usually enjoyed along the way. So, if you have the time and you would like to join in, see Mrs Love for available dates. On the other hand, if you are new to Rotary and are unsure what RYDA is all about...

Our club's calendar year started off really positively. The same cannot be said for those drought, bushfire and more recently flood-affected communities. While on duty on the bucket collection at our market last Sunday, one of the visitors to the market commented that "Australia is a country of extremes as evidenced by a bucket collection for both bushfires, drought and floods". Let's spare a thought for those reeling from natures' extremes.

Welcome to the beginning of another new year where we will continue to have an ongoing commitment to the Liverpool Plains community through the Rotary Club of Quirindi. At our next two markets we will be collecting tools in conjunction with Harry's Shed for the residents of the Balmoral/Picton area who lost over 200 sheds in the past few weeks. Ray Kane has already generously delivered a trailer full of tools to the area and hopefully we can add considerably to that.

Rotarians Against Malaria (RAM) - an activity of Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) is a volunteer-run organisation working to eliminated malaria. In 1900s, malaria was pandemic in the world. One can only imaging the burden of malaria disease to all countries. Progress has been made. Fifteen years ago, malaria killed a child every thirty seconds. Under the Millennium Development Goals, however, considerable progress was made in preventing, diagnosing and treating malaria. As a result, deaths have fallen by 60 percent. Now under the ambitious Sustainable Development Goals, we are aiming to reduce malaria cases and deaths by a further 90 percent by 2030.

All of us are ambassadors of Rotary and of our club. Do you remember who invited you to Rotary? Did someone call you and invite you to your first meeting or did you seek out Rotary on your own? In my case, I not only had a moderate knowledge of Rotary through my father who was a member in our home town, but early in my career in the early sixties I was involved in the initial cover design for a new regional magazine which was to be known as Rotary Down Under, working with the first editor Paul Henningham.

Recently at a club assembly, President Charmaine posed the question.... did we as a club need a system of mentoring not only new members, but older and longer serving members as well? The word "mentor" originated in the mid 18th century from the name of the adviser of young Telemachus in Homer's Odyssey and is defined in the Oxford Dictionary of English as... "an experience and trusted adviser".

What is it like taking a large team to Africa? It has probably been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. In mid February, I began leading Rotary members from all over the East Coast of the United States through Ghana. I’ve tried to give the team a warm Ghanaian welcome like I’ve received on my earlier trips. A large trip is a real blessing because each person sees Ghana and our work in a different way.

Throughout India and around the world, Rotary clubs are celebrating a major milestone: India has gone three years without a new case of polio. To mark this historic triumph, Rotary clubs illuminated landmarks and iconic structures throughout the country with four simple but powerful words, "India is polio free."
